Who are we?
We are a group of Town of Hempstead Ocean Lifeguards that have spent most of our lives in and around the ocean. Each summer we see misplaced fear and anxiety regarding the ocean. This year, we decided to put together a one-time Ocean Safety class to try and clear up some of the misconceptions about the ocean.
In class, we'll give you in-depth descriptions of ocean hazards, such as rip currents and the condition known as an "undertow". By the end, you should be able to spot these conditions and be able to enjoy the ocean.
We'll also show you how you should react if even in a dangerous situation, as well as how to act if your friend is in trouble and you see him/her from the beach.
We believe that a better understanding of the ocean is the key to understanding it.
